Washington Commanders, previously known as the Washington Redskins and Washington Football Team, started off in Boston when the city was awarded an NFL franchise on July 9, 1932 and took the name of their landlords, the Boston Braves. In 1933, the team moved to Fenway Park and changed their name to the Redskins. Team owner George Preston Marshall moved the franchise to his home town in 1937, where they played their first season in Washington DC. In July 2020, the club’s original Redskins name and logo were dropped following years of outcry from critics who denounced the name as a slur used against Native Americans. In February 2022, a new logo and team name was announced as the team became the Washington Commanders.
