The city of Oakland was awarded the eighth AFL franchise on January 30, 1960. A “name the team” contest was held by the Oakland Tribune, and the winner selected was the Señors. After a few days of being the butt of local jokes, the fledgling team and its owners changed the team’s name to the Oakland Raiders, which came in 3rd in the contest.

Prior to the 1980 NFL season, owner Al Davis attempted unsuccessfully to have improvements made to the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum. He signed an agreement to move the Raiders from Oakland to Los Angeles. The league owners at the same blocked the move, causing Davis to filed an antitrust lawsuit. In May of 1982, after a mistrial from the first case, a second jury found in favor of Davis and the Raiders relocated to Los Angeles for the 1982 season. On June 23, 1995, Davis signed a letter of intent to move the Raiders back to Oakland. The move was approved by the NFL and 1995 season saw the Raiders playing in Oakland again. On January 22, 2020, the Raiders officially moved to Las Vegas. The Raiders logo has remained the same since 1964.
