Originally named the Decatur Staleys, the Chicago Bears franchise started in 1919 as a A. E. Staley company team, competing in the American Professional Football Association, which would later become the NFL. The football team relocated to Chicago in 1921, and was renamed Chicago Staleys. In 1922, team owner George Halas changed the team name from the Staleys to the Bears. The club is one of only two remaining franchises from the NFL’s founding in 1920, along with the Chicago Cardinals franchise.
