Originally known as the Buffalo Bisons, the Buffalo football team sought a new identity and named itself the “Buffalo Bills” in 1947. However, that team later merged into the NFL Cleveland Browns in 1950. The name proved itself to be popular enough that the AFL team Buffalo Bills formed in 1960. The club joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger for the 1970 season. The modern Buffalo Bills logo uses a bison to represent the city.
