The Tennessee Titans started as the Houston Oilers in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The Houston Oilers were very successful and won several divsional titles in the 60’s. They became the first professional football team to play in a domed stadium- Houston’s Astrodome.
When owner Bud Adams did not get a new stadium, he decided to move the team to Nashville in 1997. However, a brand new stadium was not ready until 1999, causing the newly named Tennessee Oilers to play in Memphis for 2 years. On November 14, 1998, the Oilers would be known as the Tennessee Titans starting in 1999 to coincide with the opening of their new stadium. They would maintain all the historical records of the Oilers Franchise.
