The Nets were founded in 1967 in the ABA before the NBA merger in 1976. The franchise played in New Jersey as the New Jersey Americans during their first season, before moving to Long Island in 1968 and changed their name to the New York Nets. Believe it or not, the nickname Nets was chosen because it rhymes with the other two New York teams Mets and Jets. In 1977, the club moved to New Jersey before moving to Brooklyn in 2012. It is widely known that one of the owners of “Brooklyn”, rapper Jay-Z, participated in creating the new Brooklyn Nets logo and colors.
