Arizona Coyotes hockey team was founded in 1971 as Winnipeg Jets. After the WHA disbanded, it became one of four franchises that joined the NHL. In 1996 the franchise moved to Phoenix and became the Coyotes. In 2014, the team changed its city name to state of Arizona to gain wider fan base around the area.
On June 26, 2024, the owner of Coyotes decided to not pursue the franchise reactivation after player assets were given to Utah Hockey Club. The league has not yet indicated whether the Coyotes will fold outright or whether its history, records and intellectual property will be transferred to the Utah Hockey Club or be split between Utah and the current Winnipeg Jets.
The current Winnipeg Jets franchise is the team that moved from Atlanta in 2011.
